Desk note · industry · EVs / insurance distribution
IRDAI granted Ather Insurance a corporate agent (composite) registration on 15 October 2026, allowing the electric two-wheeler maker’s wholly owned subsidiary to distribute and service insurance without underwriting its own policies.

On 15 October 2026, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India registered Ather Insurance as a corporate agent (composite). Ather Energy Ltd, the Bengaluru-based electric scooter maker, owns the subsidiary fully. The certificate lets the unit distribute and service life, general, and health insurance products sold by partner insurers. Ather told stock exchanges on 16 October that it has not named insurer partners yet and did not quantify expected revenue. The company said the move diversifies income and taps its installed base of riders. Separate market data placed Ather third in electric two-wheeler registrations in September 2026, with 30,479 units and a 14.71% share.
Vehicle makers increasingly earn beyond the first hardware sale through financing, extended warranties, and insurance commissions. A corporate agent model keeps balance-sheet risk with licensed insurers while Ather captures a slice of premium for every policy sold through its app or showrooms. Scooter buyers may see bundled cover at purchase, similar to car dealers, which can lift attachment rates compared with hunting policies online. For insurers, Ather’s young urban customer file is a distribution channel; for Ather, recurring fees can smooth swings in scooter volumes. The registration is not a manufacturing subsidy; it is a regulated sales licence that must be renewed and audited like any other agent.
If you ride an Ather or plan to buy one, compare bundled insurance quotes with standalone policies on price, IDV, and claim service before checkout. Rivals such as Ola and TVS may respond with their own tie-ups, which can improve choice for EV owners. Investors should watch disclosure on non-vehicle revenue share, which Ather said was 12% of FY25 sales versus 10% a year earlier. Track named insurer partners, commission rates in annual reports, and whether IRDAI raises conduct rules for OEM-linked agents.
Telecom / IPO
On 22 October 2026, exchange data showed Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213 crore issue had drawn about ₹3.73 lakh crore of total bids by late evening on Day 2, with the retail portion oversubscribed and market commentators citing diverted cash from other listed stocks during the book build.
SEBI / market infrastructure
On 22 October 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India proposed letting stock exchanges and depositories fund core-market and regulator-mandated initiatives without prior approval for each ticket, while keeping board oversight and financial safeguards and inviting comments until 12 November.
E-commerce / food delivery
On 22 October 2026, reporting said Flipkart is testing an internal food delivery product called Eat-in by Minutes with more than 8,000 employees in Bengaluru, using Ekart logistics as it prepares to compete with Zomato and Swiggy in meal delivery.
Digital trust / compliance
On 22 October 2026, eMudhra Ltd said its board will voluntarily withdraw from the global SSL/TLS certificate segment after a key-security incident on eight intermediate certificates, citing compliance cost and weak economics while stressing that other digital-trust services continue.
